Grapplefruitanate
by Chloe Macdonald
I went to a fancy dance
wore a skirt instead of pants
If I won, I’d get romance
I went to live beneath a rock
didn’t have a door to knock
inked out pictures of a sock
I went to walk out on a string
pretended I was wearing wings
then I went to go swimming
I went to a house of nonsense
enjoyed all its crazy contents
hopefully crazy will win this contest!
Memory
by Ethan Macdonald
Looking out to sea recalls my grandpa’s stately home
And of the sandy shores nearby, waves splashing me with foam
And every day, the sports my friends and I played long and loud
And the honorary seashell that the champions held up proud
I often spent my summers in that sleepy, dreamlike town
The salty air, the little shops that lined the streets of cobblestone
On one adventure down the coast, my sisters and I found
A ragged rope we guessed had held a pirate’s captive bound
The daring struggle in the darkness ‘neath the cliffs along the shore
Was passed off by our grandma as a fiction, nothing more
Grandpa, on the other hand, spun us fictions every day
But I see his smile fading now that Grandma’s passed away
As we stand here dressed in black hearing how she will be missed
Grandpa glances at the heart pierced by an arrow inked on his wrist
When he gets up to speak, I think once more of wide, blue seas
As he says these few and simple words:
“We should be glad of memories”
Scream
by Audrey Kunz
Fill my ears and grip my throat/I pretend that I've forgotten how to say/These words that rest under my tongue like cotton/And with smoke in my windpipe, my mouth is dry/What beast is this, so fragile that/The mention of its name could break it?/Yet it holds me fiercely, leaves me terrified/I can't find the strength to make a sound/While inside there builds/A scream.
Hidden
by Cecie Reese
Water drips to puddles,
Echoes in the dark.
A hidden gold,
Without a single mark.
An orb of paint,
Pressed into skin.
Led to by rope,
On lands that it is in.
What award,
is this here?
Lying in the dark,
That it might disappear.
Broken Ball
by Kaylyn Fletcher
The dancers flash by
One stands alone
His eyes searching
For his only goal
He searches for the lady
With a mark covering her shoulder
She eludes him
And he desires for her presence
He fixes his tux
And with a bow to a lady
He takes his leave
Hoping to draw her out
His heart broken
He leaves the ball
In hope for a better day
He will come back
Light and Dark
by Michael Hardman
Darkness surrounds and never relents
It is difficult to find my way around
It drains my energy and I am all spent
For now, I will drown
Even though it may seem impossible
But there is light to be seen
The darkness is very hostile
But it can’t hide the scene
The light continues to grow
The light continues to shine
The light brings warmth
The light brings hope
The darkness begins to fade
The darkness begins to hide
The darkness cowers away
The darkness is gone
