First things first: relax. Close your eyes and breathe in for 8 counts, hold this for three counts, and then let it out for another 8 counts. Do this seven times, or until you feel most of your tension flowing away.
Now, you'll need something to help your creative juices flowing properly. Go to Pandora and create a radio entitled writer's or something similar. Or you can make your own playlist of songs on your iPod. Just make sure that there are very few songs with words and have most of them be very differing. Have a fast and slightly loud song, a smooth calm song, something sad and something happy. You need to have a large variety of songs, because these songs will affect your mood and will influence what sort of events will happen in your writings.
Sometimes it helps to have some random things and pictures set up around you, because if you are hitting a sudden fallen tree in the path to your imagination you'll need something to help you think of something. A simple pen could make you think that maybe every time your character touches a word, what that word represents will come to life in one way or another.
If none of these things help you, what you may need to do is stand up, stretch, and go for a short walk through a grassy park or downtown.
No matter where you are I suggest having a notebook and pencil, whatever size you wish, with you at all times. Look around at your surroundings wherever you are, you don't know what could stand out at you and bring an idea popping into your head. And you definitely don't want to lose that idea, even if you think you have the most perfect memory ever, you might forget one important detail, so remember to jot down your ideas, and if it's too long write down the biggest key words that will help you remember everything your mind came up with.
When you go to sleep at night, have a dream diary and pen (or just a plain piece of paper or notebook) right next to your bed. Now, if you wake up in the middle of the night or in the morning and you remember a dream, sit up and write EVERYTHING down, if it's too long write as many key words down as possible such as what kind of place it was, who was there (if you know who), what happened, any colors that stood out in importance, any actions that happened, anything and everything that you think is important and will help you remember all the details when you read the paper later on. Now keep all these dreams together in one place, or in a dream journal or notebook, and have them next to you when you are trying to write. You don't know what idea from your dreaming mind might come in handy in a new book you're writing.
That's it for now, have a very British day.
